Heart Mtn Scramble on 19-Jun-2010

We watched three eagles soaring over Lac des Arcs in sunny skies then set off up Heart Mountain. The ground was dry and footing good. We paused a few times on the way up and speculated on our chances of avoiding rain.

We stopped for lunch at the top of Grant McEwan overlooking Barrier Lake. Storm clouds over the Ghost looked threatening but fortunately stayed to the east. I was surprised at the number of Prairie Crocus still in flower.

There was a short patch of snow on the dip to the east, but it was well travelled and gaiters weren’t needed. The descent along the ridge was pleasant on the sound, dry rock. Lower down in the woods there were a few greasy muddy sections. The final trudge through the woods beside the #1 highway was pleasant with the sun filtering through the trees and warbling birds.
