Had a great day touring out to Burstall pass this weekend.

Conditions were on the serious side of Considerable and Burstall was selected as a destination because with a bit of cautious route finding you can still get up there in touchy stability conditions. The Avy report was cautioning with regards to the warming temperatures but despite the blue skies we did not get the feared start of a natural cycle. Surface snow remained flufy well below treeline.....

It was a beautiful day although periodically windy.

After reaching the top we skied down a moderate line to the North of the pass, but not so far north as to be exposed to overhead. Descending the headwall we elected to take the gully instead of the trail and were rewarded with a fun run down….. although at the bottom there were a few unwanted ... Aldercations (Pun credit: John Gapp).

Soon after starting up the trail, a member found themselves insufficiently recovered from a recent bug to do the trip and elected to turn back. We left them with an FRS radio and a contact plan.

From the top of the pass we were able to check in with the person via the radio, but were unable to reach them from the bottom of the headwall. Interesting how geography effects the use of the radios more than distance (up high we were above ridges that blocked the radio lower down).

Looking up towards Robertson, Lots of bare Ice.
