Boom Lake ski
We met up at the Boom Lake parking lot before 10am where we found close to 10cm. of new snow. Given the elevation of about 1740 meters, I don’t think the temperature ever got above freezing.

Fresh snow

Shortly after setting out we came across what proved to be the main disappointment of the day—deadfall. Most could be circumnavigated fairly easily, but three or four proved to be a bit of a challenge.

Philip after surviving deadfall

The new snow helped controlling speed where necessary and packed well, which was an advantage since there were a few hikers on the trail, but no divots. Icing up of skins or waxed skis was a bit of a problem but this was offset by very good overall coverage. All in all, great early season conditions.

Arnold

We arrived at the lake shortly after noon for a relaxed lunch. No sun, but no wind and good visibility.

View across lake

The return trip was enjoyable since it was predominantly down hill. We were all back at the trailhead by about 2:45.

The general consensus was that it was a worthwhile start to the ski season with a number of reminders. Bring skin wax, double check that skins and boots match the skis, try out new equipment near home to name a few.

Many thanks to all for their cheerful and supportive company and to Celine for the photos.
