Trail hike
Trip name:

Report:

Conditions for this trip were far better than expected: manageable wind, warm temperatures (and even a fair amount of sun), and no need for spikes. We maximized our time above treeline first by travelling the full length (about 1 km) of Cox’s south ridge, where we found a sheltered, sunny, snowy spot for lunch. Then on the descent we took the alternate off-trail ridge route from the base of the avalanche slope and managed to hit the main trail pretty much on target. An extra bonus today was that we were the only ones on the trail.

We saw 4 extremely globular grouse, plus a lost domestic sheep along highway 68 that may have been an Icelandic sheep (I looked it up - very beautiful!).

Thanks to the group for yet another soul-satisfying November hike: Maria, Jane, Rob, Ingrid coordinator. Special thanks to John for warning me about potential snowy/icy road travel. We met up at Sibbald Lake to ensure that everyone had snow tires and traveled in convoy, but as it turned out the Powderface was mostly bare with just a few sections of snow!

Walking to the far end of the ridge (Jumpingpound Ridge in middle distance)

Sunnier than expected!
