Activity:
Trail hike
Trip name:
Mesa Butte - Curley Sand loop +bonus hill
Coordinator:
Ron
Report:

It was a cool start with a brisk breeze and only a few layers were doffed at the end of the first climb as we continued along the ridge exposed to the west wind. Once into the thicker forest the wind was a lesser factor and the second climb in the sun up the steep grass kept us warm:

The trail was mostly free of snow & ice on a short northerly descent and then easy going to the top:

The final push to the top

The views were good although it looked quite blustery over the mountains to the west. The top was suitably sheltered for a pleasant lunch and a good location for a team photo:

After traversing the summit plateau the steep descent down the northeast slope was quite dry where we reconvened with views to the north:

Regrouping at the bottom of the descent

We did the bonus hill to the east, which took us back up into a strong wind, but this was not an issue once back in the valley. Walking on the road through the new cut block was muddy in spots, it was particularly gluey and built up under the soles of your boots; fortunately it was a fairly short section. We were back at the cars by 2pm

Thanks to a lively group of participants who joined me, Ron C/S/P,, on this fine fall foothills hike: Norman, Barbara, Susan, Peter, Nancy, Douglas, Sarah, Bill, Carl, Celine, Enrique, Janet, Teresa (photos), Jane, Tatyana.
