Report:
When we arrived at the Numa Falls parking lot it was 8C with a bluebird sky. There was no snow on the ground and a hot day lay ahead, we contemplated not taking the snowshoes but common sense prevailed. We packed them and thanked ourselves later. From the parking lot we walked about 200 metres south on Hwy 93, crossed the road and went up into the trees. After maneuvering deadfall for about an hour snow appeared and it was here we put on the snowshoes, approximately 400 metres up. At first it was slow travel as the snow would unexpectedly swallow your leg whole. At times the postholing was potent. We were well below the col at this point but pursued and then magic.

A glimpse of Mt Haffner.

Damian below the summit.

The snow became supportive and travel was pleasant. Just below the shoulder of Haffner, two Ramblers ditched their snowshoes and opted to continue on rock. The other two forged ahead on well supported snow to the summit. Here we lingered for lunch before heading back down on rock to retrieve the snowshoes.

A lot of snow remains on Vermillion Peak.

Going in search of ditched snowshoes.

Returning to the col and snow is still supporting us.

We were lucky as the snow was still supportive until well below the Vermilion Haffner Col. Thank you to Inge, Damian and Shirley for joining me on an epic day in the mountains. Also, a huge shout to Inge for her first ever snowshoe trip. Yours truly, Christine, c/s/p
