Win some, lose some. Today we ended up in the latter category with uncooperative weather. We started out under cloudy skies and it didn't look great to the west with the odd rumble in the distance. A ways up the trail while still in the forest it started to rain and got progressively heavier, not to mention increasing lighning and thunder. We took an extended break in dense trees in the hopes that the storm cell would move on, but when there was lightning with a one second thunder lag that was a decision maker. The grassy meadows above treeline would be sopping wet and the open ridges of our destination are no place to be when there is lightning around. We retreated to the cars where it stopped raining and drove down the highway to Cat Creek Day Use to avail ourselves of the picnic shelter for lunch before heading home.
