Trip Report
Trip Date:
14-Jun-2021
Activity:
Scramble
Trip name:
South Baldy to Mt Baldy (north) traverse
Coordinator:
David
Report:

This was a very scenic traverse from Baldy pass, up south Baldy, along the ridge to (north) Mt Baldy and down the ridge to highway 40 for a 2km car shuttle. Very pleasant company but the key feature this day was HOT, HOT, HOT. +14c at the 8.30am start but +29c at the 3.45pm finish, rather longer than my estimated 6 hours. Very little wind.

After a short 2km car shuttle, the shaded walk up to Baldy Pass was quite pleasant. However, with negligible wind it was hot during the ascent with short scramble sections to lunch around 12 noon on South Baldy.

Lunch on South Baldy: Tatyana, Margaret, Leslie, Jeannette

The connecting ridge to Mt. Baldy presented no problems and 2 members even used some old snow to refresh their water bottles. Several other parties passed us going south. While the crux SC6 ascent of Mt. Baldy was negotiated with care, one member dropped their helmet, never to be seen again. We enjoyed another break on Mt. Baldy while identifying various peaks to the west. eg Fortress, Lougheeds, Bogart.

We continued down the ridge of Mt. Baldy to the road with several breaks reaching the cars about 3.45pm I believe. This was essentially Kane's normal ascent route in reverse.
