The weatherman had forecast mixed sun and cloud, but we ended up high cloud with no sun until we started the descent. The route was the usual easy stroll along the canal and then the steep grunt up the trail through the trees. Once above tree line the group made their way up the talus ridge to the base of the slabs, where we donned helmets.
Mount Lawrence Grassi from tree line
Heading up the ridge below the slabs
The slabs were bone dry, which is the way you want it, as there is rubble on the slabs and drops offs on either side. So a fall could have ramifications.
Starting up the slabsWe reached the summit at 12:15 and settled in for a long lunch.
Marmot at the summit of Lawrence Grassi
Looking South from the summit of Lawrence Grassi
Ramber summit photoOne odd thing on this trip was finding a marmot at the summit of Lawrence Grassi. Not sure what it would find for food up there. Some of the group scrambled over to the knob to the South.
We took great care in descending the slabs and made our way down the ridge to tree line.
Coming back down the slabs
Gary and Susan on the slabsFrom there it was a quick descent back down the trail to the canal and the 1.8 km walk back to Goat Creek parking lot. We were back at the vehicles by 2:30 PM. A fun group with lots of interesting conversation and humour. Thanks to Arnold,Gary,Susan,Clifton,Bruce,Sonja,John,Simon , Toshiko and Brian for joining me Kevin (C/S) on this mountain adventure.
