We had a lovely day in Kananaskis yesterday. The biggest problem was the #1 highway was snow-covered and icy in many places on the drive out - it didn't look like it had been plowed with the little bit of snow that had fallen overnight. The turnoff and overpass onto Hwy 40 had lots of drifted snow, but Hwy 40 itself had been plowed although snowcovered.

The parking lot to Barrier hadn't been plowed, and wasn't full when we arrived around 9:30. There were a lot more cars there than people on the trail would indicate as there are about triple the amount of cars with people avoiding carpooling.

There was very little wind and bright sunshine all day, with stunning views.

The trail had fresh snow on it all the way, more on the upper parts beyond the 1st lookout.

Spread out on trail leading up to Barrier Lookout

There were no large groups on the trail - mostly pairs of people, and small family groups nearer the parking lot. It was easy for our group of 5 to keep our social distance throughout. We had the Lookout to ourselves for lunch, and spread out on 2 sides of lookout to keep our distances on the benches. When a couple approached as we were finishing our break, we left to give them the space for their lunch. We and other groups stepped aside to allow each other to pass.

Lunch at Barrier Lookout

When we got back to the parking lot, there were cars parked along the highway and a Parks truck was blocking entrance to the parking lot, presumably to limit the number of people at this popular spot (no issue with leaving).

Thanks to Jim,Yolande,Sonja and Teresa (p) for responsibly sharing time in the mountains from Barb (c,p,s)
