Off-Trail skiing
Trip name:
Piggy Plus - Burstall Col

Report:

The theme of the day was wind ... like last week! Rather than do a group huddle at the parking lot we sought the shelter of some trees a few hundred metres up the trail. There was lots of fresh snow but a broken trail was available initially. We did break off from it, heading south and taking turns breaking trail.
We regrouped in a sheltered spot near treeline for lunch and it was pointed out that even the trees without leaves (i.e. the larches) on the ridge were swaying in the gentle breeze.

Enroute to the col ... maybe?

We took it one step at a time and surprisingly made the col in relatively windless conditions, but this was temporary.

Up at the col, but no lounging around today.

Looking north from the col (a short lived moment of decent visibility).

As for the descent, the only close call came from someone in the group: acknowledge Bill avoiding a "kamikaze" collision with me at a point below tree line. (I should have been going slower so I could snow plough ... but I like powder!). The rumour in the powder circles is that the new skis needed to be saddle broken.

Thanks for coming out (and thanks for the photos).
