Report:

Announced with <24 hours notice because the weather forecast was so good, I just had to get out somewhere. This trip did not disappoint.

It was a cool -17c when we pulled into the deserted Nakiska parking lot and set off via the lodge by 9.00am. We soon found the correct trail to Skogan Pass and started ascending: Sim on wax, Cathy on fish scales and me on half length skins. The trail was skier tracked with occasional evidence of earlier tracksetting. Sim led us over to the site of the Hummingbird Fire Lookout where we enjoyed a break in the sunshine. Many years ago, I remember having a good view from this point, but trees have grown so now there is nothing.

Ramblers ascend the Skogan Pass Trail

Undaunted, we returned to the main trail and continued upwards to the Skogan Pass viewpoint and picnic table occupied by a group of Canmore Meanderthrals. So we backtracked slightly for a windless lunch by the trees. It was very pleasant in the warm sunshine.

I believe we started our descent around 2.00pm arriving back at Nakiska lodge soon after 3.00pm for a 6:30hr day for 22km and 750m vertical. The car thermometer now read -1c. The snow and general conditions were nearly perfect. The company excellent. Great day.
