Report:

Patience paid off big time. Three years ago we ascended the slopes of Mt Roberta in thigh deep snow and were slapped with a snow squall. Tackling debris in an avalanche gully we picked our way up using only a map and gps waypoints. Since that day I’ve been itching to return to test an easier way up. This peak would be worth the effort due to it’s spectacular panoramic views. Anyhow, when the weekend weather forecast looked promising, I reached out to my Rambler friends and called the trip. Armed with Chip’s gps track to ascend the Northwest Ridge, a more gradual way up, ten of us started out around 9 a.m. on a snow covered Pocaterra ski trail. Within 20 minutes we found orange flagging to indicate where to enter the trees. It was here we put on microspikes and followed a faint yet obvious trail that led us right to tree line. Some of us layered up here to prepare for gusting winds that never did develop. The summit was reached by noon and we lounged under a warm, blue sky for up to one hour.

Not a bad view for lunch.

On return we opted to shortcut down a gully before traversing right into the trees and joining our up track and were back at the cars by 3 p.m. This peak has increased in popularity since it was featured several times on social media. Three years ago a faint trail and flagging did not exist. Meanwhile, a big thank you to Jane, Suzy, Philip, Katrin, Damian, Christine G, Mathieu, Clifton, Inge and Spektor the dog, for joining me. I was able to rid the Mt Roberta bug from my system and now, can move on. Yours truly, Christine M c/s/p
