Trip Report
Trip Date:
1-Sep-2018
Activity:
Off-Trail hike
Trip name:
Green Mtn loop via Spaulding Point
Coordinator:
Harold
Report:

When I left home at 6:50AM there was a bitter North wind which I thought would make for a cold day. This changed dramatically and the wind died down by the time I got to Heritage. On the drive to Indian Oils we we had broken clouds and short bursts of showers which also stopped by the time we arrived at Indian Oils. The new concrete bridge crossing the Sheep River at Tiger Jaw falls is pretty impressive. It even has a sign with Truck weight ratings. The low water level at of Dyson Creek made for an easy crossing.

Morning Creek Crossing

From the Green Mountain road we found a well used trail due south from the Spaulding Point. This shortened the hike up the open Grass slope.

Up The grassy slope to Spaulding Point

Some chose to scramble up through the cliff band others took the easier route on the left side to Spaulding Point. This gave us a good viewpoint to the east. Since it was too early for lunch we decided to hike west to the highpoint of Green Mountain marked by a survey marker. Since it is in the trees it offers no viewpoint.
We descended a short distance and had lunch just above "The Castle" which gave us a excellent view south towards Junction Lookout and Mist and Storm Mountain to the West.

Our Lunch Spot just above "The Castle" (just behind us)

After lunch we went a little west and descended to explore "The Castle" which is an interesting rock outcropping.

Mel Descending From The Castle

We went south westerly down the slope and found numerous trails, cows a salt lick before we joined up with the Green Mt. road close to where it met the road/trail to Junction Lookout. As we approched and crossed the creek we found numerous others having a picnic near the falls. Similar crowds at the bridge crossing at Tiger Jaw Falls
