Activity:
Trail hike
Trip name:
Grass Pass 714875 via Pack Trail Coulee
Coordinator:
Brian
Report:
Strong winds made for a not very pleasant hike up to Grass Pass. Although it was 3 at the trailhead, the wind was so strong that we had difficulty opening cars doors.  Most people opted to get into the trees before before adjusting packs  and taking bathroom breaks. The 10 cm. of snow at the beginning was packed and soft enough for relatively easy walking.

Out of the Wind at the Beginning of the Trail

As we climbed higher the snow got deeper and a crust developed on the surface that made walking more difficult. Once we got out of the trees, we were subject to very strong wind gusts that caused us to stop and wait for them to subside. Deciding that going to the top of the ridge for lunch was not practical, we opted for lunch in the trees at the pass.

Boundary Pine

After lunch we took a quick tour over to the Boundary Pine for a photo op, and then descended quickly back to the trail and to the cars. We arrived back at the cars at 2;30, having walked 7.7 km. and climbed 488 meters.
