Trip Date: 22-Jul-2012
Activity: Trail Hike
Destination: Powderface Ridge 515344
Report:

A fine summer day in the mountains, although with the hot sun we were grateful for the shaded trail for much of the ascent. The views of the surrounding mountains were quite clear which made for pleasant rest stops:

Barbara & Kathy on Powderface trail

We had a relaxing lunch on the summit and possibly spotted, with binoculars, Brian’s group over on Nihahi Ridge trail. Entertainment was provided by inquisitive chipmunks and golden mantled ground squirrels. Some ravens did aerobatics for us. Our return was via the south ridge before the steep descent back to the trail. Not too many on our trail, but it was quite a busy day elsewhere as the Elbow Falls and Allan Bill pond parking lots were full. Thanks to Barbara and Kathy for joining me. Ron C/S/P.

Flora and fauna report:
There was a profusion of flowers in the meadows which stretched our abilities to identify. Following are three, perhaps the experts in the Ramblers can correct me if they are wrong or they can identify the unknown one:

Inflated oxytrope (oxytropis podocarpa)

Unknown flower on Powderface Ridge trail

Alpine Lanterns on Powderface Ridge trail

As for fauna, chipmunks, ground squirrels, ravens, whiskeyjacks and Clark’s nutcrackers were seen. There was one horse on the trail under a rider searching for a geocache; there were also free roaming horses along the road in the morning and seen from the hike:

Wild horses
