Wow, thank you for sending the photo. unexpected snow, eh? how was the hike? everyone looks happy in the photo, but must have been cold.
I am wondering if you are the second person from the right?
Mayumi - author of a Rocky
Mountain Outlook article on the fiftieth.
Hallo everybody,
it's a long time since I was a member of the Rocky Mountain Ramblers, but it sure was a good time.
Just a few years ago I visited Calgary and I have met some of the old gang, as Wally Drew, Henk and Ruth Oliemans and Sandy and Nancy Vair,
where we stayed and had a wonderful time with them.
It is just to bad, that we have allready arranged our holidays for
this year and that is the reason, why I am not able to attend your
celebrations.
But I wish you all all the best, have most of the time the weather you
need to be outside and keep a good relationsship among the members.
I sure hope to be able to visit Calgary again and than I drop in to
say hallo to you.
Thank you for your invitation and god bless you all.
Joe Behringer - the cracy swissman!
Just wanted to let you know I received your invitation to celebrate your
50th anniversary. I would be thrilled to attend the Mt. Allan hike on
July 18th. Thank you.

Thank you for the invitation to your 50th Anniversary.
I may be able to join you on Sunday, May 9 for a jaunt up Mt. Yamnuska
but I'm not sure at this time.
No, I will not be able to join you on Saturday, July 17th because I
will be in Fairmont. I won't be back in Calgary until the evening.
Yes, I would like to join you on Sunday, July 18th for a hike in
Kananaskis and for the potluck. Just let me know where to go and what
to bring. It easier for me to meet the club in Kananaskis than to car
pool.
I joined the Ramblers in around '58 or '59 and left the club in around
'74 or 75. At one point I was Vice-Chairman and Wally was Chairman of
the club. Backpacking was my favourite activity with the club and
skiing came in a distant third.
I now do far more hiking and skiing than when I was with the Ramblers
and cover far greater distances.

The Rocky Mountain Ramblers Association was founded by John Hickey (MacInnes) on
March 2, 1954. It was affiliated with the Ramblers Association of Great Britain
and the Canadian Youth Hostellers Association. The RMRA was to stimulate an
interest in backpacking and in holiday tours with a dynamic outdoors program. The
club was unofficially known as "Hickey's Hikers" in those early days. Meetings
to plan trips were held in John's bedroom in his parents' house. In 1955
annual dues were $1.00.
John led the first Ramblers trip up Yamnuska on May 9, 1954, and the first backpack holiday tour to Mt Assiniboine later that summer. He served as Chairman (President) of the club from 1954 to 1956. The first recorded meeting of the executive (including John Hickey, L. J. Owens, J. Laut, R. Taylor and Ron Smylie) was held on May 31, 1954. John was awarded an honorary life membership at the 1958 AGM. This photo of John was taken at the 40th Anniversary in 1994. [Bob St.John photo]
